IT started at €225,000 and you might think that’s a strong price for a derelict house, but this cottage at Glounthaune has auctioneer, Kevin O’Connell of Dan O’Connell and Co, grinning with delight.

His waterside wreck, (he doesn't even include rooms in the brochure), has reached €285,000 so far and looks likely to continue upwards.

While it’s quite an attractive-looking house, its major selling point is the waterfront location in the village, which is just five and a half miles east of Cork city.

This is a well-serviced area, it has goods road, connection to the Tunnel and a rail connection.

And Glounthaune is also on the up as a residential location, which explains the heavy bidding on this property. The corner site of a fifth of an acre is also a strong lure, says Kevin O’Connell, because it means the house can be greatly extended.
