Moving mansions
Former bookmaker, local personality and beneficiary of a significant recent land sale, JJ Harney has put Knockhouse, at Grecedieu, up for sale with a €1.1 million guide with agent John Rohan.
JJ Harney successfully bought the 7,000 sq ft Carrigleigh House, a smart Georgian facsimile, within days of it going on the market with Waterford estate agent John Rohan at the end of the summer.
Carrigleigh House was built and finished by Eddie and Mena Kearns, one time owners of Waterford Castle, who also lived for 20 years in the 200-year-old Carriganore House, and who modelled the new mansion Carrigleigh House on features of the centuries old Georgian original but with state of the art electronic fit-out.
That modern mix appealed so much to JJ Harney that he bought Carrigleigh unseen he was travelling overseas, his wife paid it a visit and he agreed a sale long-distance just knowing about the house.
It is likely that whoever moves into the Harney home, Knockhouse at Gracedieu, won't feel the same sense of urgency, and can take time to enjoy a wander around its two acres of grounds. with outbuildings and stables.
"It is one of the finest residential premises to have come on the market in Waterford in recent years, and Gracedieu is a very popular residential area. We'd expect very strong local interest in trading up into this house," said Mr Rohan.
A L-shaped two-storey dwelling, it has a porch, hall, drawing room and living room, each with fireplaces, a kitchen/dining room, utility and ground en suite bedroom, with five further overhead bedrooms, one with en suite, and main bathroom.
It is within a close stretch of the city centre, on two acres of mature woodland gardens, including a spreading chestnut tree, with stepped lawns, has oil heating and PVC windows, and a cloak of Virginia creeper front and back.
