Take your pick from two large homes at the edge of the city
This mix of the pastoral with the practical has fuelled a strong drive for building sites on the outskirts of our major towns and the enforcement of increasingly stricter regulations by the planners.
The alternative to getting tied up in red tape and builders procrastination is having your cake and eat it - just buy in.
In the Cork county area there are two big, detached houses on offer at the moment and both fulfil the above criteria with subtle differences. First up is Laurel Lodge at Greenfields, a large estate of one-off houses at Killumney, Ballincollig.
Brand new and with 2,600 square feet of space, it clocks in at €650,000 and offers all the required features for buyers at this level.
A cherry kitchen, deal joinery, quality tiling and bathroom fittings and a conservatory as well as a raft of living rooms, makes this a desirable property. Add in two of four ensuite bedrooms and a location off the Ballincollig bypass and you have luxury with convenience.
The selling agent is Norma Healy of Sherry FitzGerald and she’s also selling Willowbrook, at Ballyleigh, Waterfall. This house is close to the main Bandon Road and is about the same distance from Cork city as the Killumney house. Here, the difference is maturity and a lower density situation.
Set on a half acre of lush gardens, the house is a five-bed with 2,300 square feet, including an attached garage. It has more or less the same range of room and includes a sunroom. One of the bedrooms is ensuite and all are on the upper floor along with a main bathroom, there’s also a guest loo at ground floor level. In very good condition, the house is priced at €550,000 and has a very private location behind a mature hedge. Windows are double glazed teak and oil heating is installed. Bishopstown is just a five minute drive away which makes it handy for the three major institutions there.
