Cow theme to the fore at new bar
Launching tomorrow on Hanover Street in the city’s teeming nightclub and bar strip off Washington Street, The Holy Cow is set to provide 20 jobs by next month.
It’s being taken on the hoof by a group with huge current bar experience, including Jonny O’Mahony, Ciaran O’Regan, Mannie Morgan and Niall O’Mahony. Bars they’ve already been associated with include The Raven, The Woodford, The Four Courts, the Bodega, The Office Bar, The Classic, Cleavers and The Savoy.
Now, knowing the herd mentality, they’ve come together to open, this venture, a 1,500 sq ft seven-day bar and night-venue for up to 200 patrons.
It previously traded as Plato Murphy’s, next to Cubin’s nightclub, and on the udder side of the street is the constantly evolving Reardens, the latter now complete with its Secret Garden rooftop venue.
‘The Wash’ has long been the city’s busiest night-time and student-favoured strip, while nearby, the sale of the 11,000 sq ft, three-storey Redz venue Liberty St, continues to drag on.
Sale terms on Redz were agreed prior to Christmas at under €1m, and a licence has been reinstated but the sale hasn’t yet closed.
Manager for The Holy Cow is Ciaran O’Regan, formerly of the Woodford, and the cow/dairy theme is being milked a bit with quiet snugs/stalls, and cocktails such as Moojitos and Cowsmopolitans.
The Holy Cow opens tomorrow with a bovine-themed launch party (‘its fresian inside?’), has a quirky Facebook launch video doing the rounds and will run seven nights a week, late on Friday and Saturday.
Unlikely to be cowed, it’s a formula the lads have, off pat.
