OS to all our political sleepers
I read this as a coded warning that the Cork/Cobh line was secure only as long as IFI paid €4 million annually to the rail company. The worker directors and unions at IFI warned Cobh Town Council and other politicians that this would be a very likely consequence if the plant was allowed to close.
Given that the Government was aware of this before they gave the nod for IFI's closure, why were our four TDs including one junior minister so silent at that stage? Are we now going to wait for Iarnrod Eireann to close the line, or will our politicians redeem themselves with a pre-emptive strike to keep it open? There are many hundreds of commuters from Cobh who rely on this train service to get to Cork each day. This might not be so serious if Government and its representatives in Cork East had provided industries for Cobh, while also maintaining the ones that already existed. I call on all our public representatives to act now to save our rail line .
