Moral dilemma
We now know the extent to which Ray Burke was in thrall to a cabal of private donors while performing his public duties as a member of Dublin County Council and as a TD. There are very serious questions now arising from the appointment of Mr Burke as Foreign Minister, at a time when the Taoiseach knew that there were serious allegations against him.
Despite all the hand-wringing and platitudes, these questions remain unanswered.
The political system needs moral renewal, otherwise our public life will be destroyed by cynicism. Already too many idealistic young people are alienated.
