Editorial cynicism strikes wrong chord

YOUR editorial on the Cork School of Music (Irish Examiner, March 26) marks a new level of media cynicism which has undermined the efforts of those of us who lobby ministers for the benefit of the city.

The obstacles that prevented the School of Music from going ahead up until now have been well flagged by the Government.

The reality is the school has been a Fianna Fáil initiative from the very beginning and it is FF which is pursuing the project to its conclusion.

Your editorial failed to mention that what is now being planned is the first purpose-built school of music in the history of the State; neither did it refer to the development of the Marine College at Haulbowline and the €116m provided for Cork schools since 1999.

What your editorial does seem to suggest is that the Government should spend the weeks between now and voting day engaging in masterful inactivity because anything more would, in the Irish Examiner’s view, be viewed as cheap political opportunism.
