God belongs in the new EU constitution

DANA Rosemary Scallon is spot on in calling for a specific reference to God in the draft European constitution.

To leave it out is a highly politicised view of the future being envisioned for us by our EU masters.

The newly-enfranchised countries of Eastern Europe are as attracted to the guarantees of religious freedom as to the economic and democratic dimensions of the new political dispensation. And without John Paul II’s papacy, would Solidarnosc have ousted state-sponsored atheism and degraded socialism in Poland?

Vaclav Havel and Lech Walesa had more in common with the common man than their would-be socialist mentors ever could in their agnostic little versions of Paradise.

Signs on, the despots who down through the ages brought their own people to their knees never seemed to bend the knee themselves to the God who gives us free will and the seeds of opportunity, regardless of how we see fit to use or abuse them.
