Ahern’s anti-war stance is astounding

BERTIE AHERN has recently repeated his bizarre claim that he in fact opposed the US invasion of Iraq and he has further claimed that anti-war activists simply misunderstood his position.

As an anti-war activist currently serving a 60-day prison sentence because of my peaceful opposition to Fianna Fail and PD complicity with the US war machine, I must admit that I am astounded by Mr Ahern’s temerity.

How gullible do Fianna Fail believe the Irish people to be?

More than 115,000 US troops and their weapons were transported through Shannon airport in 2003. Moreover, hundreds of US warplanes were refuelled and military flyovers were allowed on a daily basis.

Official documents published some time back in the Irish Examiner revealed that dangerous munitions such as Patriot missiles were also brought through Shannon.

Simply put, Bertie Ahern and his government actively assisted the build-up to the US war on Iraq and effectively transformed Shannon airport into a cog in the US war machine. They continue to assist the US occupation of Iraq.

It is an insult to the intelligence of Irish people to ask us to accept Mr Ahern as an opponent of US war mongering. The Irish government supported the US war on Iraq.
