Youth will have direct input into treaty

AS the momentum picks up in the convention on the future of Europe, we reach a defining moment in the history of the EU.

Youth will have direct input into treaty

We are on the brink of an exciting new departure, as the convention nears the finalisation of text for the draft Constitutional Treaty, which will incorporate all of the laws and policies of the EU, as well as the Charter of Fundamental Rights.

The only problem is that most of the people affected by this, namely the citizens of Europe, are either utterly oblivious to the process or worse, they simply don’t care.

As someone who is passionately in favour of further EU integration based on a federal model which addresses the need to bring the EU closer to its citizens and which tackles legitimate concerns regarding the “democratic deficit”, I am disappointed at many of the proposals now emerging from the convention. I am further alarmed at the acquiescent reticence of the Irish Government with regard to many of these proposals.

Today and tomorrow, 40 young people from across Europe will come together to finalise their views on how the Constitutional Treaty can be framed to reflect the democratic ideals of the EU in a more tangible way. The results of their work will feed directly into the convention on the future of Europe.
