City should make sure to keep beautiful vista

WELL done Mary Leland (Irish Examiner, October 25) for alerting your readers to the developers’ plans to obliterate the view of St Fin Barre’s Cathedral.

City should make sure to keep beautiful vista

Perhaps Cork people take their beautiful Church of Ireland cathedral a bit for granted. But for a Corkonian like me who has spent more than 40 years earning a living in Britain, the joys of returning home were always underlined by the certainty that our unique landmarks - Shandon and the two cathedrals would remain unspoilt.

Having on various civic occasions met the respective bishops from opposite sides of the river, I am only too aware of how much they value and champion what our second city has to offer. Let’s hope that they will take to heart Joni Mitchell’s warning that “you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone”.
