Ministers who don’t reply, and one who does

DURING the last two years I have written to the following cabinet ministers on matters pertinent to their portfolio: Joe Walsh, Noel Dempsey, Charlie McCreevy, Martin Cullen and Jim McDaid when he, too, held a portfolio .

Guess who was the only one to reply? Surprise! Surprise! It was the man everybody loves to hate: Charlie McCreevy. The others, reputedly, are all highly educated professionals. Are they instructed not to reply to letters? Is there a lack of expertise, a lack of civility or a literacy problem?

No, I didn’t vote for Fianna Fail in the last election, nor do I ever intend to, and it seems peculiar to me that despite their claims, few of them seem to understand the meaning of democracy. An elected TD is in the Dáil to represent all his/her constituents, irrespective of how they vote.

Martin Cullen, on a radio programme recently, asked a critic who he had voted for in the last election.

This was an appalling example of political ignorance.

It’s a mystery to me how anybody could vote for this man, and how he could be appointed to a cabinet post.
