Last chance to have your say on GM experiment

TODAY is the deadline for posting submissions to the EPA about the BASF chemical company’s plan to grow GM potatoes on five acres in Co Meath.

Representations must be in writing, along with a €10 fee, to reach the EPA, PO Box 3000, Johnstown Castle, Co Wexford, no later than 5pm.

Irish farmers have contacted me to stress their opposition to this plan. Likewise, consumers are overwhelmingly opposed to GM food products. The Green Party supports farmers and consumers in their opposition. We also support locally produced fresh (and ideally, organic) food at a reasonable price.

GM food is controlled by whatever company owns the patent on that product, and profit is the primary aim of this plan, for which farmers, ordinary citizens and the environment will pay unless we put pen to paper now.
