Postcodes plan should be put in the junk mail
I am delighted that the Irish Postmasters Union has come out against this idiotic proposal and I hope the other unions in An Post also reject it.
The proposal will cost the company an estimated €6 million to introduce, but where is the public demand for it?
The only support for such a scheme is to be found among certain elements of business community who want to inundate us with their junk mail. This will also damage the environment because tons of junk mail will just be dumped by people who don't want it.
There are far more pressing issues for Mr Dempsey to be dealing with. Why doesn't he show the same urgency in paying An Post workers the 8.5% increase owed to us under Sustaining Progress? Why doesn't he show the same urgency in recognising that An Post provides a social service just like CIÉ and the ESB.
This smacks of yet another solo run by Mr Dempsey, just like his ill-fated plans to test the efficiency of electronic voting when he was environment minister in 2002 a debacle which ultimately cost the taxpayer €50m before his successor, Martin Cullen, was forced to scrap it.
Or his plan as minister for education in 2003 to reintroduce college fees, which was also scrapped, but only after costing the taxpayer an extra €42m to improve student grants.
