Columnist is wrong about capital needs
He praises it for being reliable, while criticising Luas for being inflexible, ie, on a fixed line.
There are a number of inaccuracies in Mr Finlay’s column. He claims there was no consultation when there has been extensive public consultation over a period of years, including years when Labour was in government. There were judicial inquiries also into each line, as required by law. Perhaps as Labour chef de cabinet he is unaware of what Labour was doing in government.
He claims that the carriages are dangerous for those exiting unless one is a 20-year-old athlete. How silly. The carriages are of European design specifically to conform to the highest needs of those with impaired mobility.
His opposition to the idea that both Luas lines should be connected is irrational. The city needs this and more quality bus corridors, as well as the heavy rail interconnector and metro.
All need to be implemented in a practical way to accommodate an expanding population and economy.
Mr Finlay also claims that St Stephen’s Green is chaotic from morning to night. This is not so. The completion of the roadworks and the new traffic routing has enormously improved flows for buses, shoppers’ cars, taxis and city tour coaches.
Rat-run car commuters have by and large been removed from this central area of the city. They, and Mr Finlay, should use public transport.
