This time last year, we said that Gaza was counting the cost of a failure stretching back before 1967. On October 7, 2023, the consequences of shortcomings in Israel’s fabled intelligence and security networks could be measured in many hundreds of dead and injured and captured, some of whom remain hostage or whereabouts unknown. That was a despicable act by Hamas.

Since then, the Irish Examiner has published 2,300 news stories, commentaries, leader columns, letters, and opinions about this grievous crisis, which has pushed climate change and the invasion of Ukraine down the news list.
