As more than 57,000 second-level graduates contemplate and absorb their Leaving Certificate results today, it is appropriate to reflect on last year's overhaul of the grading system.
The aim of the biggest structural change in 25 years was to reward effort by each individual and put an end to the pressure on students to learn off by heart for the purpose of regurgitating in the exam what they may not even understand and are likely to quickly forget.
