The law of unintended consequences reaches into all aspects of life; a plan to achieve one laudable objective can often have a less-than-positive impact in another area.
There is growing concern, especially among those involved in voluntary community activities in rural Ireland, that rescheduling the closing rounds of the hurling and football championships, so they might be concluded in August, rather than on the traditional September dates, undermines the capacity of communities to run events which have been held in August since the old God’s time.
