Government cutbacks - Education an easy target for cuts

TAKING money out of education programmes is a retrograde step. The latest Government decision is tantamount to further handicapping already disadvantaged students.

Because of the latest cut in a series of Government cutbacks, which are not at an end yet, education is once again a victim of balancing the books.

This time the Minister for Education, Noel Dempsey, is to cut 36 million from his budget, which means that planned initiatives across the gamut of education will have to be dropped or curtailed.
