Motorists may vent their anger

PROPOSALS to hike petrol taxes in order to bridge a multi-million euro gap in the country’s road-building programme are certain to be unpopular with the majority of motorists.

Controversially, an additional five cent levy on petrol is among a range of measures aimed at finding ways to fill a huge cash pothole in the funding of new roads.

Clamping additional petrol taxes on motorists is the most contentious element of a National Roads Authority report now on Transport Minister Seamus Brennan’s desk.
