GIVEN the inexorable rise of racism in Ireland, it is not surprising the United Nations is to receive a damning report on the Government’s lack of leadership in combating this problem.

There is a bitter sense of irony here as the scathing document comes at a time when the Irish people are digging deep into their pockets to help the countless victims of tsunami tidal waves unleashed by the St Stephen’s Day earthquake in South-East Asia.

Unfortunately, it seems our unstintingly generous response to calamities abroad is not replicated when immigrants arrive on the doorstep.
