Any move to curb the problem of drink-driving is to be welcomed but the latest move is somewhat perplexing, and as a long-term deterrent seems to be of doubtful value.

As a way to allow the introduction of random breath-testing, the Cabinet has approved a new fast-track approach for drivers barely over the limit.

They will be given the option of accepting a fine of €2,000 and a six-months disqualification or taking their chances and going to court where they will still be fined and face disqualification for two years.
