Sectarianism ban - No place for racism in Irish politics

THERE should be a broad measure of support for Foreign Affairs Minister Dermot Ahern’s proposal that all political parties sign up to a protocol banning sectarianism in Irish politics.

At a time when Ireland is experiencing a huge influx of foreign workers, such a declaration would send out a powerful signal from political leaders.

Unfortunately, in the past, some politicians have had few qualms about playing the racial card. Indeed, members of Mr Ahern’s Fianna Fáil party were accused of using such unacceptable tactics.
