Suicide report - Focus on cause and prevention

YESTERDAY’S shock discovery of the bodies of a man and woman in a car will bring heightened relevance to a new report showing that suicide accounts for almost a third of all deaths in the 15 to 24-year-old age group.

While gardaí are keeping an open mind on their deaths, the grim discovery adds weight to a cross-Border report finding that in real terms more people in that age group take their own lives than are killed in road accidents.

Though suicide rates are increasing on both sides of the Border, the situation is worse in the Republic.
