Illicit alcohol sales - Reduce excise to stop trade

WITH the festive season in full swing, it is staggering to learn that a whopping €50m is being lost to the State annually through illicit sales of alcohol.

The problem is so serious that the Revenue Commissioners warn against buying alcohol in suspect places.

People who stock up in cut-price markets along the Border are often sold counterfeit products.
