COMING amid one of the worst periods of carnage ever witnessed on Ireland’s roads, the news that two out of three drivers are breaking the speed limit on lethal rural stretches represents a wake-up call for the gardaí to enforce the rules more robustly.

Despite Coalition pledges to address the mounting fatalities, the toll continues to escalate. Shockingly, eight people died on the roads between Sunday and yesterday morning, bringing the new year count to 50.

Words cannot describe the impact of such carnage on the families of those cut off before their time.
