Road injuries - Points system making a difference

The penalty points system for driving offences had a distinct impact not only in lowering the death rate on our roads, but also in bringing about a dramatic decline in the number of spinal injuries suffered in road accidents.

These were down by half in the first six months that the points system was in operation.

The most dramatic decline was in the month of December, when the number of spinal injures dropped from 10 to three over the same month the previous year.
