It MIGHT normally appear uncharitable to argue against a 76-year--old man being released from jail early because of his age and infirmity.

But the case of James Kelly, or Brother Ambrose which is his religious name in the Brothers of Charity, is no ordinary prisoner.

He appeared in the Criminal Circuit Court in Cork yesterday and was successful in escaping the prospect of spending the rest of his life in jail for a series of convictions on appalling child sexual abuse.
