The blatant hypocrisy of this scenario was graphically illustrated yesterday when junior Justice Minister Frank Fahey admitted his driver had received an on-the-spot fine for exceeding the speed limit in Co Galway last week.

Ironically, it was the week gardaí launched their annual blitz against speeding and drink driving in a bid to reduce the appalling carnage on Ireland’s roads.
