Easter ceremonies - Pope leads Church by example

IN an uncanny way, the absence of Pope John Paul II from his customary role at the Easter ceremonies in Rome has heightened global interest in one of the most important feasts of Christianity.

The Pontiff, who for 26 years was always present at the ceremonies in Rome, likes nothing better than to be with his people in a physical and direct way.

Yet, his enforced absence through illness gave special significance to Good Friday’s ceremonies.
