NOT for the first time, Irish consumers are playing second fiddle to big business as new charges come into effect tomorrow for the disposal of old electrical goods.

While some people might not object to paying €40 extra for a new fridge or €20 for a new television in exchange for the disposal of their old appliances, the fact that charges are being imposed solely on consumers is selective, unfair and costly.

Regrettably, this further example of stealth tax will spark even more illegal dumping of redundant household goods up and down the country.
