Local authorities have been striving for sometime to clean up our image as the dirty Irish. None of our cities has yet reached the cleanliness norm of our European neighbours.

The clean up campaign is currently suffering a serious setback as a result of cigarette butts being discarded on the streets since the introduction of the smoking ban.

There has been an increase of over 50% in the number of urban areas considered to have a serious little problem. The number has jumped from seven at the end of 2003 to 11 so far this year.
