EU appointments - McCreevy can make a big impact

FINANCE Minister Charlie McCreevy may not have landed the plum job he longed for in Europe, but he has, nonetheless, secured an important portfolio in the EU Commission.

Having been shafted by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, to clear the way for next month’s Cabinet reshuffle, the outgoing minister can afford to smile after getting one of the top dozen posts in Brussels.

As Internal Market Commissioner, he will be responsible for the operation of Europe’s market and financial services.
