The robbery of €2.7 million from the Brinks Allied security van in Dublin yesterday was the second major robbery of its kind in little over two weeks.

In comparison with the earlier robbery, which was a highly organised heist, in which some €4m was stolen, the latest raid did not appear to require much sophistication or organisation.

This is not to suggest that the criminals behind yesterday’s heist were not highly organised or that their operation was not well planned. But the opportunism of the robbers was facilitated by elements of farce on the security side. Indeed, it seemed like an April Fool’s joke two days early.
