THE Government decision to devise a national policy framework aimed at boosting private investment in healthcare is sure to draw political fire as a classic PD ploy to solve the crisis in the health service.

Part of a 10-point plan by Tánaiste and Health Minister Mary Harney to shake up the creaking service, the radical privatisation move is intended to alleviate ongoing pressures on acute hospitals beds and A&E units.

If it works, the move will be welcomed. But many will view the initiative with scepticism, especially if it adds another expensive layer to Ireland’s cheque-book health service.
