It is symptomatic of the alcohol problem which exists in this country that a seminar (Saturday) organised by Barnardos will hear that over half of Ireland’s young people start drinking before the age of 12.

It is shocking to realise that the problem has reached such proportions, and the blame for that must lay with the ridiculously laissez faire attitude to alcohol in this country which is not just tolerated, but encouraged, at all levels of society.

The example given to young people by adults is a hugely contributing factor to their acceptance that alcohol is an intrinsic ingredient when it comes to enjoying a social occasion.
