WITH road deaths rising, thousands of prosecutions for speeding in doubt and the penalty points system falling into disrepute, the Government’s road safety policy is in tatters.

Adding to this litany of problems, a major EU report on road safety out today shows Irish motorists are far less likely to be caught for drink driving or speeding than most of their European counterparts.

There could hardly be a more revealing criticism of the level of garda enforcement of road traffic legislation than the Sartre survey which covered 1,000 motorists in each of 23 EU member states.
