This week, after 14 years in office, President Michael D Higgins left Áras an Uachtaráin for the final time, and Catherine Connolly was sworn in as Ireland’s 10th president.

In her inaugural address, she said the president should be “a unifying presence — a steady hand, but also a catalyst for change.”
