Let it sparkle this season
Glistening sequins, shimmering metallics and bold colour are among the hottest fashion looks for winter.
But all that glisters isn’t gold — so unlike the Three Kings, you don’t have to be laden down with the stuff to look ho-ho-hot under the mistletoe this festive season.
Like Scrooge, we followed the bright lights of the high street to find the best party dresses to suit every shape. “If the Christmas tree gets to sparkle, I figure why shouldn’t we,” says Corina Gaffey, fashion editor of Stellar magazine.
“For girls, the party season is all about glamming up and having fun — and what better way to make a statement than sequins, golds and silvers.”
Kate Midleton, Rachel Zoe and Kim Kardashian are just some of the celebs snapped working the ‘tinsel’ look lately. And here’s how to outdo the disco ball in style at his year’s Christmas party.
“The best thing about metallics is that they’re flattering on all skin tones,” says Gaffey. “But pay attention to the fabric, as anything too shiny, silky or synthetic is liable to look tacky and show up every lump and bump. Remember that you’ll probably wear this dress a dozen times over the coming months, so it should be the most flattering thing you own.”
The most forgiving is the classic LBD — but the ‘B’ doesn’t have to stand for ‘boring’. “Go for a little black dress with more interesting features like feathers, lace or leather,” says Gaffey. “Or get busy on last year’s LBD with a glue gun and some studs — add them to the shoulders or cuffs for a little rock chick flair.
“Although black is famously slimming, plus-size ladies shouldn’t be afraid to shy away from block colour or print. Also, don’t forget about your outerwear and accessories — complete the look with white tux jacket or leather jacket and statement jewellery.”
And when it’s all over, there’s no need to hang up your festive frock for 12 months. “Your party dress shouldn’t just be regulated to the 12 days of Christmas,” says Gaffey. “The ‘dress down’ vibe is huge at the moment, so simply throw an oversized knit over it and some chunky boots for a cool-day look.”
