Fit for TV, the riveting new Netflix documentary series, is the misbegotten offspring of the News of the World. People used to buy that newspaper on a Sunday, sliding it inside another paper in order to prevent the neighbours from knowing.
The News of the World, before Rupert Murdoch took it out the back to shoot it, was the ultimate nasty pleasure. Particularly about vicars. The vicars in what journalists called ‘The News of the Screws’ were usually located in some quietly respectable village in Middle England, where they were highly regarded. As were their wives.
