Euro underdogs - Go Iceland!
Those odds were certainly against Iceland, a tiny Nordic nation with around one third of the inhabitants of the Portuguese capital Lisbon, when they faced Portugal in the 2016 UEFA European Championship.
Yet their soccer team prevailed at the Euros, holding the mighty Portuguese to a draw when most commentators expected a rout at their expense.
The bonus for the Icelandics was that it provoked Portugal’s and Real Madrid’s overpaid and over-indulged striker Cristiano Ronaldo into having a hissy fit which was almost as entertaining as the game itself. “When they don’t try to play and just defend, defend, defend, this is in my opinion shows a small mentality and they are not going to do anything in the competition,” squealed the Portugal captain.
We salute our Icelandic neighbours and wish them well in the tournament.
