It’s better roads we need, not more speed cameras

Motorists must drive within the speed limit — and therein lies a problem.
It’s better roads we need, not more speed cameras

Our roads, at best, can be described as inadequate. Most countries with a better road safety record than ours have speed limits which are applied with a margin of error of 10%. Road safety scientists do not refer to speed, they speak of traffic friction. A vehicle travelling at 75kph in a 100kph zone is as dangerous as one travelling at 125kph.

Most of those safer countries also have laws that state that a slow-moving vehicle, when it gains a tailback of more than 10 vehicles must pull over and let the road clear. Our NRA don’t know how much hard shoulder they have on our N-roads, so how can that be legislated?
