Media also to blame for minority government

Your editorial of May 12 condemns the ‘old bread-and-circuses instincts’ and ‘the old hucksterism’ and the ‘gombeenism’ of the programme for government.
Media also to blame for minority government

Coming from a media that were cheerleaders for all of this in spades during the years of the celtic tiger and then spent the years since the resulting collapse in 2010 complaining about the consequent austerity that is a bit rich.

The reason we now have, as your editorial says, ‘a weak, dependent, minority Government’ is a result of the behaviour of the powerful opinion formers in our media over a long period.

On top of cheerleading the decisions which bankrupted the country during the pre-2009 boom and then complaining about the consequences when the country went broke the Irish media denigrated the people who were elected in 2011 to try to clean up the mess.

The people elected in 2011 were less than perfect but they sure as hell were better than the people who ran the country during the post-2000 years and the people in the media who supported their disastrous decisions for nearly a decade.
