Defence Forces have served us well abroad

Over the years, government ministers have dispatched the Defence Forces to various parts of the world, primarily to assist in United Nations peacekeeping and peace-enforcement operations.
This involved living and working in war conditions.
Eighty six members of the Defence Forces have given their lives in such missions. Many others suffered injuries.
The Irish Defence Forces have established a record of professionalism and have carried out their assignments to the highest standards, for very little monetary reward.
Meanwhile, the relevant minister sits in a very comfortable office, enjoying a substantial salary, plus allowances, in addition to subsidised food, and normally takes the credit for the outstanding work carried out by the members of the Irish Defence Forces.
Now that changes are being ‘forced’ on the political establishment, perhaps more credit should be given to the members of the Irish Defence Forces.
