We can’t gloss over the cruelty of the Inquisition

Margaret Hickey’s version of the history of Christianity ( Irish Examiner, December 18) was not a version I would have chosen.

We can’t gloss over the cruelty of the Inquisition

For example, she conveniently avoids reference to the fact that the 4th Crusade was not launched against Islam but against Constantinople, the then capital of the Holy Roman Empire.

The writer must also know that in the course of the Inquisition it was not just countless numbers of the living who were burned at the stake but that untold numbers of the dead were exhumed from their graves for this same purpose.

That, I might add, is but the tip of the iceberg where the tyranny associated with the history of Christiantiy is concerned.

If Ms Hickey thinks that we can gloss over that dastardly chapter of history, I would suggest that she is mistaken.
