Dominos Pizza open to special needs staff

I am writing in praise of Dominos Pizza, Blackpool, Cork. My son has a diagnosis of ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder). He is currently studying the Leaving Certificate Applied Course. A requirement of the course is that he complete a work placement programme.

This is not an easy task for a person with ASD who has difficulty processing information in quite the same way as the majority of people. He has different sensory needs and requires extra time with some tasks.

Not many employers are willing to make the necessary adjustments that are needed to enable people with differing abilities cope in the work place. We have in the past experienced difficulties even being served in restaurants when out with a group of people with ASD. As a community we, children and their families are well used to the position of outsiders. Finding work experience was a daunting prospect.

A relative approached the management in Dominos on our behalf and without hesitation they agreed to allow him to work in their Blackpool Store for the required time. They have been encouraging, supportive and above all friendly.

He is having a very positive experience and is learning so many new skills in this wonderfully inclusive work environment. His confidence and his self esteem have grown, even in the short time he has been with them. Everyone is not capable of working at the same speed or in the same way but everyone has something to offer, all they need is opportunity, encouragement and a little kindness.
