I was a patient who saw the health service working at its very best
On June 9, I suffered a serious fall on a local footpath.
This resulted in a painful and upsetting fracture of my femur. However, thanks to the action of a generous passerby, I was comforted and supported until the arrival of a family member and the ambulance service.
I was then taken to CUH and operated on the following day. During my week-long stay there, I had the benefit of excellent care by doctors, nurses and ancillary staff. Their dedication to my welfare was most impressive, despite what was an obviously onerous workload.
Indeed my surprise was that they could be so professional and thoughtful, given their many demanding commitments.
On June 16, I was transferred for two weeks to the rehabilitation unit at Victoria/South Infirmary. Here again I experienced the utmost care and encouragement from all medical, nursing and ancillary staff members. This unstinting care was supplemented by that of a a superb physiotherapy team, who helped me to regain confidence and return to more independent living at home on June 30.
However, the good service did not end there as for a number of weeks afterwards, I was visited in my home by members of the community rehabilitation and service team who took me through an exercise schedule with consummate professionalism and gentle encouragement.
The outcome of such service is that I have regained much of my mobility and self-confidence and continue to make daily progress towards full recovery.
I will be forever grateful to both hospitals for what I have achieved in a relatively short space of time.
I wish to express my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all, both professional and lay, in making what was a painful and debilitating experience, into an opportunity to see in action the goodness and Christian spirit of so many in our local hospitals and also in my own community where people rallied around to help me.
