Ending the lifesaving mission of the Naval Service at a time when thousands of people continue to make the desperate journey across the Mediterranean would be short-sighted and certainly cause greater tragedy (‘Call for naval service humanitarian work in Med to be extended to winter’, 27th August).

The need for action is as great now as it was when the navy was first deployed last May.

Whatever the outcome, it is clear that the personnel on board both the LÉ Niamh and LÉ Eithne are heroes. Those who have served on this mission are worthwhile nominees for a People of the Year Award.
