Tony Moriarty’s letter (Irish Examiner, May 30) is headlined: “Why do we pretend Irish is still a popular language?”

Nationality not popularity is the point. The 1916 patriot, P.H. Pearse captured the truth perfectly: “A nation without a language is like a person without a soul.”
