Oxford’s attitude was laughable

That an Irish woman is to be the first female Vice-Chancellor of Oxford brings back memories of the battle women had to be allowed to even enter Oxford or Cambridge.

After a long struggle, Oxford agreed that women could get a degree and style themselves BA (Oxon). However, Cambridge still said no. In a concession they said women could have the title but not the degree.

This magnanimous concession meant that women could not style themselves BA (Cantab) but BA (Tit). Few availed of this great offer.
